Find Out What Causes Your Snoring So You Can Cure It
- Irregular airflow inside your respiratory tract causing the tissues (uvula and/or soft palate) in your throat to vibrate (snoring through the mouth)
- An obstructed nasal passageway (snoring through the nose) due to different reasons, ranging from allergies to deformities of the nostrils
- The tongue dropping into the back of your mouth (tongue based snoring) when the jaw drops back while you are sleeping on your back
Also, the following criteria can contribute to snoring:
- Age – Elder persons are more likely to snore. As your age increases, your throat becomes narrower and the muscle tone at your throat decreases slowly, which causes snoring.
- Gender – In general men are more affected by snoring than women, because of the differences in the structure of the neck. The neck of a man is larger than that of a woman and other organs in the respiratory system are different too.
- Nasal Deformities – Obstructed breathing may be caused by nasal deformities like deviated septum and others. Obstructed breathing will cause snoring.
- Enlarged Organs – Blockage of the airflow due to large tongue, abnormal enlargement of the tonsils or the adenoids or swelling of the thyroid gland or goiter may cause more vibration while breathing causing snoring.
- A Long Soft Palate Or Uvula – A long soft palate or uvula can cause obstructed breathing and vibration to cause snoring.
- Allergies, Sinus, Cold, Flu And Asthma – All these irregularities will cause nasal block and affect the airways. They will impair inhalation which might cause snoring.
- Obesity – Overweight persons are more likely to snore. Fat deposited around you neck make your throat narrower which causes snoring.
- Fitness – If your muscles are not toned and if you have loose muscles then you will snore.
- Medication – Medication that initiates relaxation like sleeping pills and antihistamines can cause the tissue around neck to relax causing snoring.
- Irritation of the air passages due to overuse of nasal sprays.
- Alcohol – Alcohol relaxes the throat, neck and tongue muscle which causes snoring.
- Smoking – If you are a smoker you will have nasal congestion. Even in case of passive smoking, nasal congestion will happen and cause snoring.
- Sleeping Position – Your sleeping position may be the reason you snore. When you sleep on your back, your throat muscles relax and a relaxed throat will block the airways leading to snoring.
- Pillows – Pillows create an angle of your neck with the bed. A very soft pillow increases the angle of the neck. This will obstruct the airway leading to snoring.
Only when you know what triggers your snoring, you can do something to prevent or cure it, and find the right devices that may help you reduce or eliminate it.
