An Overview About The Most Effective Anti Snoring Devices
A wide variety of therapies and devices are available to treat snoring – but which ones really work?
As we have explained here, habitual snoring can be caused by many reasons. In order to find a snoring treatment that works you first need to find out which type of snorer you are. There is no stop snoring solution that would work for everybody. Successful treatment of snoring may for some snorers be accomplished by a simple lifestyle change, while persons with sever snoring problems may need to start wearing an appropriate stop snoring device at night.
The successful application of anti snoring devices requires three steps:
- Diagnosis of the snoring cause
- Selection of the appropriate treatment and snoring device
- Accurate application
With so many different stop snoring aids available, the selection of the best device may appear somewhat difficult, but they are designed around three major themes.
1. Oral Stop-Snoring Devices
Nearly all oral anti snoring devices fall into one of two categories: the tongue retaining type and the mandibular advancing type. Patients have to use oral appliances every night in order to keep their airways open while they are sleeping.
How Efficient Are Oral Snoring Devices? The Standards of Practice Committee of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine reported that oral snoring appliances were found to be effective to control OSAS (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome) in about half of the patients with success, with an even higher success rate in cases of mild snoring (compared to patients who suffered of sleep apnea).
2. Nasal Stop-Snoring Devices
Among the Nasal Anti Snoring Devices, nasal dilators are small stainless steel or soft plastic coils that claim to help reduce snoring caused by vibration of the throat, as they keep the air passage open. Nasal dilators need to be inserted into the nostrils at night. If you want to buy one, make sure the product is FDA approved.
Another over-the-counter remedy against mild snoring are Nasal Strips. They also help keep your airways open while you sleep. In fact, nasal strips are one of the most popular anti snoring devices since they are a cheap, safe, and effective way to stop snoring.
3. CPAP Devices
CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) devices are usually used to help persons who suffer from OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). It requires that you were a CPAP mask which is connected to a pump that maintains the pressure of inhaled air at a higher level. CPAP masks seem to remain the best method of managing sleep apnea and OSA.
There are many other over-the-counter alternatives such as jaw supporters for those who suffer of mild to moderate snoring.
All these anti snoring devices can reduce or even prevent snoring, however, it is important to realize that your snoring may be caused by health conditions that may require medical attention. To be safe, consult your doctor to find out exactly what treatment is needed to stop snoring in your particular case.
